What it’s Like To Have an Epiphany About Your Dream Job

USO and Alernative

Of course I’m getting to the point in my life where I should be starting to have some idea what I want to be when I grow up. It’s funny that when I was a kid I wanted to be a veterinarian (ew, blood), then I wanted to be a singer (still want to be) but at no point did I think I wanted to spend the rest of my life writing and planning and working with people (obviously I didn’t even know what public relations entailed).

I’ve actually very recently had an epiphany, and decided why I was put on this Earth.

Pretty much anyway.

I want to work for the USO- the United Service Organization. This is the best idea I have ever had. When I was in high school, the seniors did an event for Veterans Day every year where we would put together our own USO show and invite the community and veterans to come. The year I participated I sang God Bless America, and I remember thinking then that someday I wanted to be in the real USO.

I was looking at job descriptions yesterday, and it makes a lot of sense. The positions require event planning and arts management (hint-hint- my undergrad) and a knowledge of nonprofits. Luckily the world of nonprofits is the only world I know.

Right now I am helping the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (I encourage you to check it out, and if its something you care about consider becoming a fan on Facebook and following on Twitter.) I manage their social media, and stuff press kits and I love it!

I love the feeling of helping and contributing to something so important. I really feel that I would much rather spend my life contributing to a real cause, helping people who deserve help, and making the world a better place than working to make money for someone else who probably already has more than enough.

Veterans Day is coming up really soon and so I’m sure everyone will be thinking about the men and women who have served our country and those that they know personally. I know I’m not the only one. My cousin served overseas and my best friend is in the National Guard and these are some of the reasons why I want to contribute.

I’m a dreamer and anyone who knows me knows that I come up with these plans and get really excited about things. Those people don’t take my dreams too seriously anymore, but this is something I really am passionate about.

This is my dream job.
